Chapter 19

Bronte woke to a commotion downstairs. Muffled voices were arguing, although she couldn’t make out what they were saying. Recognising her mother’s voice, she sounded panicked. She lay listening to them argue, not wanting to move, everything had stiffened and swollen. The icepack had helped but it had started to melt, and she needed to take it to the bathroom, but knew she couldn’t do this without alerting everyone downstairs and was becoming more curious about what they were discussing. Carefully, she slid off the bed holding herself, and tiptoed to the bathroom, tentatively opening the door. It slowly opened, creaking as it went. Catching it, she cringed. Holding her breath, she listened carefully to hear whether anyone was coming, but they were too engrossed in their heated conversation. Bronte could hear what was being said from here, their voices were clearer. Eavesdropping on part of their conversation, she forgot about the ice and crept forward to sit on the top step.

Downstairs Angelina had arrived, having rushed to her mother’s after receiving a call from Emily, telling her about what had happened. She was unhappy that her mother hadn’t called her. “You should have told me!” she shouted, “I need to know these things. She’s my daughter, and I had to find out about it from Emily.”

“It wasn’t like that Angelina, I telephoned Adam because I knew he would be collecting her. I didn’t want to disturb you at work, because I know how busy you are, I was going to ring you tonight after you got home.” Mrs Salvador looked at her daughter pleadingly, trying to appeal to her sense of reason, but Angelina looked at her mother enraged. “This is why I didn’t ring you right away, you always overreact,” she said, trying to calm her down. Instead, it had the opposite effect. Angelina launched into another attack.

“I had to find out that my daughter had been beaten, and then gone off by herself from my friend, rather than my own family,” she said, looking at her mother in despair.

“Yes, because I was going to call you later, like I said.” Mrs Salvador knew there was no hope of getting through to her when she was like this.

Angelina paused to think for a moment. “It was definitely Lucy and Regan who did this?”

“Yes.” Angelina started to pace.

“But how could Lucy of all people do this, we’re friends with her parents. I bet it was that Regan who made her do it.”

“Possibly, but Bronte told me that she was the one who held her down. I think she was a willing participant, from what Bronte has told me. I’m sorry, but she has turned into a bully.”

“I’m going straight round there, to sort all this out.” Angelina stomped over to the table and picked up her car keys.

“Wait, before you go there’s more.” Angelina looked at her mother dumbstruck. “I think it may be better if you sat down, for what I have to tell you.”

“What... what is it?” Angelina sat down and looked up at her mother.
